Hunt local beaches for fossil shark teeth, whale bones, and the shells of ancient snails and clams. Learn collecting techniques and how to properly preserve your specimens from our professional paleontologists. Show family your field journal and fossil collection after a river cruise on the last day of camp.
GUARDIANS OF THE ESTUARY
Entering Grades 4 – 5 | July 8 – 12 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. | $120 museum members, $130 non-members
Paddle, wade, hike and sail local waterways! What’s living out there, how do they interact, how do we impact the estuary, and how can we help? We’ll get muddy, creative, canoe, collect and explore and search our estuary ecosystem, then brainstorm ways to protect it.
MUSEUM ADVENTURE CAMP
Entering Grades 1 – 3 | July 15 – 19 | 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. | $100 museum members, $110 non-members
Explore the inner workings of the Calvert Marine museum – from fossils, fish, and otters to the wonders of the salt marsh. Go fossil hunting on a local beach. Make bug kites, spy on Fiddler crabs, and interact with reptiles in the collection. Get a special behind-the-scenes look at our River to Bay exhibit where our animals are cared for.
COROPLAST BOAT BUILDING (3 DAY CAMP)
Entering Grades 7 – 9 | July 22 – 24 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. | $80 museum members, $90 non-members
Full STEAM ahead! In this hands-on minicamp, students will use a variety of science, engineering, and artistic skills to build their own kayak-style boat out of coroplast, a plastic material used to make signs. Boaters will practice navigation and paddling in various craft. After camp, take your boat home with you to continue the adventure!
JUNIOR DOCENT TRAINING

Becoming a museum Junior Docent involves a two-year commitment from middle school students to learn how to be museum docents. The program kicks off with a week-long “boot camp” where each cohort experiences the inner workings of a museum. Unleash the adventurous explorer hidden inside yourself. Learn about various explorers, from Norsemen to early European colonists, and discover the skills and tools they used to shape a new world. At week’s end, put your abilities in reading maps and using navigational tools to the test as you take a “daring voyage” on our skipjack.

Ahoy, Mates! Come join our scallywag crew on this week-long camp. Hunt for hidden treasure, stage a sea battle on the museum’s land-locked bugeye, swab the deck and sing sea chanteys, climb aboard to learn about local pirates, and sail the high seas of the Patuxent River on the Wm. B. Tennison.
