April 2017 marks the 49th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988, popularly called the “Fair Housing Act”. This act outlaws any discrimination in the sale, rental or financing of housing, because of race, color, familial status, religion, sex, physical/mental disability, marital status or national origin.
The Fair Housing Act reflected America’s willingness and determination to ensure that appropriate housing and services exist and are available to everyone. It is available without discrimination for each stage of one’s life, so they can remain in their community as they grow older. It enforces housing opportunities and supportive services for those who have mobility or sensory impairment, developmental or emotional disabilities or mental illness. It also allows low-income, working families to compete in the housing market, while providing affordable housing for families to buy or rent. It ensures every American is entitled to freedom from discrimination in housing.
The Calvert Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) is committed and dedicated to the principles on which the Fair Housing Act is grounded, and encourages all citizens to abide by the letter and spirit of the Fair Housing Act, has designated the month of April 2017 as Fair Housing Month.
It has been proclaimed by the Calvert Board of County Commissioners that the month of April 2017 be known as “Fair Housing Month” in Calvert County. All citizens are urged to celebrate the value of harmonious and diverse communities of neighbors and support the goal of equal housing opportunities for all people.
