As it was Restaurant Week in Calvert County, we spanned out and did 4 restaurants. The first was Blondie’s Baking
Company, located in downtown Prince Frederick, just a block south of the courthouse. Located in the front of a beautiful old house, with a wraparound porch, it was quite charming. Plenty of parking behind the building and close enough for county employees to walk.
Upon entering the door, the customer counter for ordering is straight ahead and to the right a beverage bar for the staff. Behind the counter is the kitchen. The restaurant offers all kinds of hot and cold drinks, from coffee to hot tea and cold drinks also from ice tea to coke. There are all kinds of choices from lattes to cappuccinos and hot chocolates to frozen frappes.
Approaching the counter, we placed our order. It consisted of the Restaurant Week Special, ½ sandwich and soup of your choice and dessert from the croissant station. Each sandwich has a cute name and for this order it was the Usual Suspect, which is sliced turkey, provolone cheese, cranberry chutney, caramelized onions, romaine and Dijon mayo on multi grain bread. The soup was vegetable containing potatoes, as the lady taking the order pointed out. For dessert it was the scone. For the second order, it was the S.O.B. which is on wheat berry bread and has turkey, roast beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, horseradish mayo with lettuce.
We found a place to sit in the dining room, which was fairly busy. Soon our waitress appeared with our drinks and not long after our food. We were not disappointed in the quantity or quality of the food. The soup was loaded with large chunks of potatoes amid the vegetables. The Usual Suspect sandwich was different from the usual sandwiches and was very good. The S.O.B. sandwich was awesome and would not hesitate to order it again. Loved the bread. And it was fresh baked on the premises that day. The scone had a light sweet taste and was amazing. The total for our lunch was $19.91.
This restaurant is worth another visit due to the variety of sandwiches and pastries you won’t find elsewhere. They have a great selection of sandwiches and salads. For breakfast they even offer Quiche. And kids are offered PBJ or Toasted Mozzarella Cheese on whole wheat. For sides they offer macaroni salad, hot German potato salad and a side salad. And never forget the awesome desserts in the case in front of you at the counter.
Everything is prepared in house by the kitchen staff. As they are a bakery, their shelves are empty at closing time. So
they ask if you want something special, please call and reserve. You may even call the day before.
