On November 5, 2018, the Calvert and Solomons Optimist Clubs honored forty students from the local high schools at St John Vianney Life Center at a banquet. Thirty two of the students were able to attend with family. This was the 62nd year of celebrating Optimist International Youth Appreciation Week.
The emcee for the evening, Ed Dorsey, Chair of Calvert Optimist Youth Appreciation Week, gave special recognition to the high school guidance counselors, who worked with the committee to select the forty students – Billy Joe Aris of Calvert High School, Dr Zelma Mark of Huntingtown High School, Ellen Oldham of Northern High School and Karin Ryon of Patuxent High School.
From the profiles of the forty students, ten are looking at pursuing careers in the medial fields, seven are thinking of becoming educators and two are looking towards military service.
Krista Brezina, President of Calvert –Prince Frederick Club and Jack Greene, President of Solomons Club presented the honorees with their certificates. The 2018 honorees are:
Calvert High School – Benjamin A. Aris, Liam A. Aris, Gabriele M. Backus, Michaela A. Bell, LeAndre R. Campbell, Justin Diehl, LeNea R. Jordan, Andrew R. Matteson and Allyssa M. Melton.
Huntingtown High School – Carlos E. Balazs, Meredith N. Brosofsky, Molly C. Gall, Caitlyn E. Gay, Hailiey B. Lagimoniere, Allison E. Moan, Amitha U. Patel, Eva J. Hoetzlein-Sirman and Gavin M. Studds.
Northern High School – Dominic N. Brady, Joseph A. Crunkelton III, Kendall A. Dent, Sarah N. Donaldson, Ethan L.P. Droneberger, Erin M. Fagan, Joseph B. Mechler, Emma E. O’Kane and Rachael J. Yocum.
Patuxent High School – Mackenzie A. Dinopoulos, Rachael E. Evans, Griffin C. Gray, Julia G. Illar, Charlotte M. Marchek, Xristina B. Quirozhernandez, Mitchell H. Richman, Sabrina E. Rodriguez, and Kathryn A. Ryon.
