Calvert County Public Schools have experienced much change this year. One might say that closing school doors and converting to online learning has been a daunting endeavor. One might also say that the commitment of Calvert County School Teachers and Educational Support Professionals is a testament to our community’s strength . More now than ever, the tradition of celebrating excellence in our schools is needed. Selecting a Teacher and Educational Support Professional of the year is, indeed, something to Celebrate.
The traditional Gala, that is ordinarily held for the winners, was not able to be held. Social distancing and restrictions because of the current Covid-19 crisis, required a different kind of celebration. A live video feed was shown at the May 21st Board Of Education Meeting. The video allowed those that would ordinarily attend the Gala, to see the winners receive their awards.
The winner of Calvert County Teacher of the Year for 2020 is Caitlin Fregelette. Mrs. Fregelette’s Husband and Daughter embraced her, when she received the award from Dr. Curry, the Superintendent of Schools. Mrs. Fregelette was so overcome with joy, that she was literally shaking. According to Dr. Steve Lucas, Principle of Calvert High School, “Mrs. Fregelette’s unmatched passion for health and fitness manifests itself daily as she leads students through rigorous life lessons and motivates and inspires them. Not only a master teacher, Mrs. Fregelette sets the standard at Calvert High School for building effective relationships, showing empathy, and providing care.” According to the Calvert County Public Schools press release, Ms. Fregeletti, will continue on to compete in the Maryland Teacher of the year competition. The Maryland Teacher of year competition winner will be announced in the fall of 2020.
The winner of Calvert County Educational Support Personnel of the year for 2020 is Mr. Tim Contee. According to the CCPS press release, Mr. Contee is an instructional assistant at the Career and Technology Academy and his duties include working with students who are attending the Calvert Alternative School. According to Travis Mister, assistant principal of the Career and Technology Academy. “ One of Mr. Contee’s best traits, is being able to identify and recognize strategies to maximize students strengths, while building up their weaknesses.”
Recognizing and celebrating excellence in our schools, regardless of the current climate, is definitely something to celebrate. We can’t thank Mrs. Fregeletti or Mr Contee enough for their contributions to our Schools. We celebrate you both, as we do all our Public School employees. We would also like to thank the sponsors who have rewarded our winners this year. According to a press release from CCPS, both Mrs. Fregelette and Mr. Contee received a two-year lease on a new vehicle provided by a partnership with Calvert County Public Schools and Bayside Auto Group. The vehicles were presented to both in the video ceremonies. The Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Professional of the Year recognition was sponsored by Bayside Toyota, Educational Systems Federal Credit Unions, Community Bank of the Chesapeake, Exelon Generation, and the Optimist Club of Calvert (Prince Frederick and Solomons).
