CCPS Hosts Special Olympic Athletes

Spec OlympicsCalvert County Public Schools Hosts Annual Special Olympics Track and Field Event

The Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) Department of Special Education held its annual Special Olympics Track and Field event on April 23, 2015 at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick. The rain date is April 24.

Sixteen coaches and 103 athletes from schools across the district participated this year.

Events included:Special Olympics

4×100 Meter Relay Shot Put

10 Meter Walk/Wheelchair Tennis Ball Throw

25 Meter Walk/Dash Softball Throw

200 Meter Run   Standing Long Jump

100 Meter Run   Running Long Jump

50 Meter Dash

Students sang the National Anthem during the morning’s opening ceremonies for Calvert County Public School’s Special Special OlympicsOlympics. Rev. Robert P. Hahn was honored to deliver the invocation. He reminds us that “in God’s eyes these athletes are perfect.” #givewhereyoulive

Every athlete received a participation medal and certificate, and those who placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th for their event were also pinned with a ribbon.

“This event is the highlight of each school year within our department. It is such a fun-filled and heartwarming day for all who attended. We encourage all family and friends of our athletes, as well as community members, to support and cheer our amazing athletes,” said Jean Hahn, CCPS Special Olympics Event Director.

The event has received support from the community. Sponsoring businesses and organizations included Calvert County Lion’s Club, Calvert County Sherriff’s Department, Calvert County Commissioners, Special OlympicsChesapeake Church, Knights of Columbus, Special Olympics Maryland, Prince Frederick Fire and Rescue Squad, and Top Hat, Inc. Support from within CCPS includes the Calvert High Choir, Calvert High NJROTC, staff from the Superintendent’s Office, members of the Board of Education, staff from the Department of Special Education and numerous student volunteers.
