On Tuesday, February 6, 2018, Sheriff Mike Evans presented the eight new Calvert County deputies to the Calvert Board of County Commissioners, continuing the annual tradition of the sheriff since 2002. Clerk of the Court, Jackie Brown, began the ceremony by having the deputies take the oath of their office. After taking the oath, the new deputies received their badges, pinned on by the sheriff or family members.
The 8 new ones are Stephen Bowlan, Andrew Crum, Branden Deleon-Suero, James Flynt, William Freeland, Michael Lewis, Michael Lorenzano and Shane Naughton. Michael Lewis and Shane Naughton were pinned by their fathers, who are law enforcement officers. Captain Todd Ireland pinned his cousin William Freeland, son of Wilson Freeland, Director of General Services. Sheriff Evans pinned the other five deputies.
On Friday, February 9, 2018, the eight attended their graduation at Chopticon High School along with all the other recruits from the other agencies.
The Calvert County Sheriff Office recruits took home three of the five Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy Awards. Deputy Andrew Crum won the Physical Training Award, Deputy Branden Deleon-Suero captured the Scholastic Award and Deputy Stephen Bowlan took home the Steve E Allen Award.
