Citizens Encouraged to Participate in Buy Local Challenge, July 18-26
Summer is here and Calvert County’s farmers markets and farm stands are full of delicious seasonal produce, meats and other local products. The Calvert County Department of Economic Development reminds citizens that there are endless ways support local farmers despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pledge to Eat Fresh Every Day During Buy Local Week
In conjunction with the state of Maryland and the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, Calvert County will celebrate the bounty of local agricultural products during Buy Local Week, July 18-26, by highlighting the benefits of buying local products from area farms, online farmers markets, farm stands and watermen.
“Now, more than ever, local farmers, businesses and watermen need the support of our community,” said Economic Development Director Kelly Robertson-Slagle. “Through the Buy Local Challenge, we encourage citizens to explore the incredible offerings grown and produced here in our county all year long.”
County residents are encouraged to take the pledge to eat at least one item every day from a local farm during the week. Add one or two local items a day to your meals – perhaps fresh eggs and bacon with breakfast, a snack of local fruit or veggies, a glass of local wine or some Chesapeake Bay blue crabs caught by a local waterman.
Check Out a Farmers Market
Visit the drive-through farmers market in Prince Frederick every Tuesday from 2:30-6:30 p.m. through Nov. 24, 2020 at the CalvertHealth Medical Center located at 130 Hospital Road. Find local produce, meat, bedding plants (vegetables and herbs) and more, while maintaining a safe social distance from vendors and other citizens.
Patrons should remain in their vehicles at all times and vendors will deliver products directly through the driver’s side window. Per Gov. Hogan’s executive order, vendors are required to wear a face covering.
