DNR Icebreaker Aids Frozen Tangier Island

2015-03-04

In addition to  escorting the ferry boat from Tangier Island, DNR ice breaking crews delivered mail and groceries fromIce Breaker Crisfield Thursday using its ice breaking vessel, the 100-foot J. Millard Tawes.

Tangier Island, which is around one square mile, has a population of about 700 residents who depend on Crisfield to get their food, supplies, medical care, schooling and more.

“We are grateful to have the resources to provide the people of Tangier the assistance they need, and to help restore a sense of normalcy during these trying times,” said John Gallagher, director of DNR’s hydrographic operations.

The Maryland State Police has also been helping, recently transporting four residents in need of medical care off the island via helicopter.
