Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival 2018 is back with a roar this August, 17th & 18th!
It takes more than a village to pull a Dragon Boat Festival together, it takes a committee of 15, a 100 strong volunteer force and at least 850 volunteer hours, with 27 teams racing and 28 food & craft vendors, and crowds of over 7000 in attendance, and that was last year.
In 2018 our 3rd annual Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival we are coming back bigger and stronger. With 33 teams racing, a weeklong practice session for teams prior to the race, 50+ food & craft vendors, a Dotting of the Eye opening ceremony, an evening of miniature boats with votives released in back creek, a Dragon Parade of teams lead by St Mary’s Ryken High School Dragon Ribbon Dancers, musical entertainment, a Dragonette games & face painting booth for the young ones, and an art poster contest, this year promises to be huge.
Local Solomon’s businesses are pleased to welcome us back this year. 2017 produced comments by local traders citing that they’d had their busiest day of business ever, with last year’s Dragon Boat event. At least two of the local restaurants Island Hideaway and The Pier are offering special Dragon Boat cocktails leading up to the event, with a percentage of monies collected being donated to the event.

An event this size takes a year’s long planning and organizing by the team at SMCR Inc., the organizers of all things Solomons Dragon Boat. All funds raised from Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival are used to develop and build programs that promote the inclusion of persons with the developmental differences into the communities of St Mary’s & Calvert Counties.
