On April 1 2016, approximately 80 students from the 4th grade class of Hollywood Elementary School of St. Mary’s county paid a visit to the Maryland General Assembly. Their agenda saw them take in a broad range of sights and sounds, which allowed for the opportunity to see their state representatives at work
The trip began with a welcome from St. Mary’s county delegates Anthony O’Donnell (29C) and Matt Morgan (29A). The group then toured historic rooms and chambers of the State House before concluding their day by observing House and Senate session
“I really liked this field trip,” said Eyverson Baker as he and his classmates prepared for departure. “we learned a bunch of stuff about the legislative process. It was really fun.”
One of the most popular aspects of the trip was learning about the events surrounding former President George Washington’s resignation from the Continental army in 1783. “We got to see the George Washington statue,” said Jacob Milner in reference to the life-size statue that stands in the newly-renovated Old Senate Chamber. The tradition of civilian national leadership – commenced with this momentous decision – was met with great admiration by the students.
A day away from the classroom has given the Students of Hollywood Elementary school a fresh, revealing perspective on the history and operation of the Maryland General Assembly. They came away in awe of the noble actions undertaken by Maryland’s past and current leaders. This visit will likely be remembered for years to come.
