On June 5th, 2015 families from all over Maryland came to the Calvert Marine Museum to enjoy “First Free Friday”. Every month, the Calvert Marine Museum likes to give back to the community by hosting a free event for people of all ages to enjoy!
Deputy Director Sherrod Sturrock said, “First Free Friday is a great way for the community to enjoy their museum, because it is the communities’ museum. All barriers are removed—it’s free, it’s after work, and after school. It’s also a great chance for families to come and enjoy themselves. Each month we try to do something to give back, it’s great to see people learning about the environment while also spending quality time together.”
The museum will have First Free Friday in August and September, and will also host free boat rides in the month of October.
The Taylor family in the picture above smiles proudly as they come together to celebrate their third son’s high school graduation! Both immediate and extended family from both sides came in support of Patuxent graduate Corye Taylor’s great accomplishment. Mrs. Taylor is a county employee and loves to support local programs. When she read about First Free Friday on the Calvert Marine Museum’s website, she knew this would be the perfect family outing. Congratulations Taylors!
Volunteer Warren Walker declares “[First Free Friday] it’s a great way to see a lot of people and kids. A lot of people tend to volunteer here after we host events like this, especially now that some parts are renovated. They really did a great job on that.”
In the above picture, the Kearns family came from St. Mary’s Co. to enjoy First Free Friday. Some of their favorite exhibits included petting the sting-rays, the discovery room, and seeing the otters in the outside exhibit.
Visitors also enjoyed music performed by the GeeZers in the Harms Gallery!
