2018-12-23

As you deck the halls, Calvert County Government asks that you take a few minutes to review these top 10 fire safety measures to ensure a safe and happy holiday season:

  • Make sure to have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually before use.
  • Never leave candles burning unattended.
  • Monitor food as it’s cooking in the oven or on the stove.
  • Follow safety precautions when using a turkey fryer.
  • Water your cut Christmas tree daily to prevent drying out and remove it shortly after the holiday.
  • Place your tree away from heat sources and exits in your home.
  • Inspect holiday lighting and replace strands as they become worn.
  • Unplug lights before you leave home or before going to bed.
  • Close the doors to all occupied bedrooms before you fall asleep.
