On November 10, 2018, the Calvert Marine Museum will host the “On Watch” Memorial Service in celebration of Veterans Day 2019, with sponsorship by the Calvert County Board of Commissioners.
The memorial statue was sculpted by Antonio Tobias Mendez and dedicated in 2007 in remembrance of service members who completed amphibious training at this location. According to dcmemorials.com, “The U.S. Amphibious Training Base, located at the end of the Dowell peninsula, was the first of its kind in the U.S. Over 68,000 servicemen trained for amphibious landing here, and later saw action in both the European and the Pacific Theatres. The base closed in 1945, but the impact of its presence changed Solomons forever.” In commemoration of World War II, the statue is surrounded by bricks engraved with the names of men and women who served their country during the war.
