Hospice Festival of Wreaths Ushers in Christmas Spirit

2017-11-21

Calvert Hospice presented their 2nd Annual Festival of Wreaths on November 18th. This year the festival was held at Calvert High School. The doors opened promptly at 10 am and first to greet the attendees was the welcome desk. Here you could find out where and when each part of the event would happen.

In the entrance was the silent auction table, the raffle table, hospice jewelry, hospice ornaments, crafts for children, and food for the hungry.  Calvert Crabs was selling drinks, snacks and sandwiches for those who needed something to munch on or drink.

In the next room, the wreaths were displayed on wire, making it easy to see the back and front of each one. Entertainment was Southern Maryland Youth Orchestra Choir (www.smyoc.org) in the morning, and in the afternoon the Huntingtown United Methodist “Praise Band.” At 10 am Santa Claus arrived by Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department on a fire truck and took his seat at the back of the room. Children lines up with their Parents to get a present from Santa (A.K.A. John Brady in the morning, Bill Miller in the afternoon). The parents got a chance to get a picture of their little ones on Santa’s knee.

In the kitchen wreath making from 11 am to 2 pm was taking place. Everything was provided along with instructors for $25. If you preferred one already made, there were 85 wreaths ready to go, 9 were silent auction that you could bid to win. Some of the wreaths were specified to be silent auction by the maker and some were chosen due to their uniqueness. Of special note, Calvert County Nursing Center donated 15 wreaths done by staff and residents, Exelon donated 6 wreaths, North Beach Garden Club donated 7, Chesapeake Garden Club donated 2 and Calvert Garden Club donated 1. St John Vianney’s Women’s Club donated 9 wreaths. There were 125 Poinsettias for purchase, red, white and yellow ones. The raffle closed at 3 pm and the winner, Elizabeth (Liz) Foster, was drawn at 3:30 pm.

Asking Jean Fleming, Executive Director of Calvert hospice, how she thought the 2nd Annual Festival of Wreaths was this year, she offered “The 2nd Annual Festival of Wreaths was another wonderful community event for Calvert Hospice, with activities for all ages and wreaths for all occasions. We exceeded our goals and are so grateful to our community for their continued support of our Burnett Calvert Hospice House. We already look forward to seeing everyone again next year!”
