Kids’ and Teen College, Chautauqua, Summer Flight Academy

CSM hosts this year’s first presentation in a three-evening series of the Maryland Humanities Chautauqua. This year’s theme “Making Waves” focuses on how water has shaped history by highlighting three historical adventurers who navigated ice, waves and the ocean depths.

Just a Few of the Happenings at CSM this July

CSM Observes Code Green Fridays. May 24-Aug. 9, College of Southern Maryland, all campuses (CSM). In an effort to decrease energy costs during the summer months, CSM will be running a Code Green initiative starting May 24 and continuing each Friday through Aug. 9. During Code Green days, most CSM buildings and services will close at 1:30 p.m. on Fridays and remain closed throughout the weekend. Code Green does not affect the St. Charles’ Children’s Learning Center, CSM Kids’ and Teen College programs or the CSM Public Safety and Preparedness team. 301-934-2251.

CSM Closed for Holiday. July 4-5. College of Southern Maryland (CSM), all campuses, will be closed July 4-5 for the Independence Day holiday. www.csmd.edu

CSM Fall Registration Opens for Non-credit Courses. July 11. Registration opens July 11 for non-credit courses this fall at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM). CSM Kids’ and Teen College. June 17-Aug. 16 (one-week programs). College of Southern Maryland (CSM), La Plata, Leonardtown and Prince Frederick campuses. Registration for CSM’s Kids’ and Teen College summer program, which includes scores of comprehensive and exciting courses ranging from guitar lessons to SAT/ACT prep, in ongoing as the programs run weekly from June 17 through Aug. 16. CSM Chautauqua Series: Matthew Henson. 6:45 p.m., July 9. College of Southern Maryland (CSM), La Plata Campus, Fine Arts (FA) Center, Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. CSM hosts this year’s first presentation in a three-evening series of the Maryland Humanities Chautauqua. This year’s theme “Making Waves” focuses on how water has shaped history by highlighting three historical adventurers who navigated ice, waves and the ocean depths. The first presentation brings to life Maryland native Matthew Henson, a polar explorer, craftsman and author, said to be the first African-American to reach the North Pole. The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is holding a LAX Prospect Day July 27 to introduce prospective players to the CSM Hawks’ Men’s Lacrosse program, as well as to CSM’s campus and the college’s academic offerings.

CSM Chautauqua Series: Jacques Cousteau. 6:45 p.m., July 10. College of Southern Maryland (CSM), La Plata Campus, Fine Arts (FA) Center, Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. CSM hosts the second presentation in a three-evening series of the Maryland Humanities Chautauqua. This year’s theme “Making Waves” focuses on how water has shaped history by highlighting three historical adventurers who navigated ice, waves and the ocean depths. This presentation brings to life Jacques Cousteau, an oceanographer, filmmaker and scientist known for his deep-sea explorations and his invention of the aqua lung. CSM Chautauqua Series: Grace O’Malley. 6:45 p.m., July 11. College of Southern Maryland (CSM), La Plata Campus, Fine Arts (FA) Center, Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. CSM hosts this year’s three-evening series of the Maryland Humanities Chautauqua. This year’s theme “Making Waves” focuses on how water has shaped history by highlighting three historical adventurers who navigated ice, waves and the ocean depths. This final presentation in the series brings to life Grace O’Malley, a 16th Century Irish pirate queen, who commanded ships, men and the respect of Queen Elizabeth I. CSM 2019 Summer Flight Academy. 9 a.m.-4 p.m., July 15-18, 22-25 (two sessions offered). College of Southern Maryland (CSM), Leonardtown Campus, Building B, Room 115, 22950 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown. The CSM Flight Academy is an opportunity for students ages 13-17 to have a fun week of aviation classroom experiences with flight skills development and teamwork in a flight simulation setting, as they explore the possibility of a career in aviation, engineering, technology or other STEM-related fields. The curriculum will include a variety of aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles, ground operations and navigation planning. $16 tuition and $64 in fees. CSM Engineer Like a Girl. 9 a.m.-3 p.m., July 15-19. College of Southern Maryland (CSM), Leonardtown Campus, Building C, Room 216, 22950 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown. Engineer Like a Girl is a free one-week summer program to familiarize high school girls in Southern Maryland with career opportunities in the field of engineering. The program includes workshops, hands-on activities and projects in a wide range of engineering disciplines. A day visit to NAVAIR is included in the program. CSM FAFSA Workshop. 2:30 p.m., July 18. College of Southern Maryland (CSM), La Plata Campus, Administration Building (AD), Room 110, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. CSM Men’s LAX Prospect Day. 8 a.m.-4 p.m., July 27. College of Southern Maryland (CSM), La Plata Campus, Athletic Field (behind the PE Building), 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. Prospective men’s lacrosse players are invited to participate in this introduction to CSM, along with the opportunity to run drills and scrimmage. Bring a bag lunch (water and Gatorade will be provided), stick, helmet, pads, cleats (grass field), and goalkeepers should bring their equipment.
