Knott Takes Best in Show in Arts Competition

2015-05-28

Senior arts competitionOn May 12, 2015, Calvert County held its Senior Arts Competition and Reception at Calvert Pines Senior Center. The Calvert Board of County Commissioners were present to congratulate and shake the hands of the artists.

Throughout the center, the seniors’ art work was displayed for all to enjoy. In the craft room, there were pencil pastels, watercolors, photography, mixed media, collage/ scrapbook, and acrylics. The small display cabinet held floral designs, and quilling while the large display case held pottery, recycled art, sculpture, and wood working. In the fireplace lounge, you could see ceramics, glazes, molded pottery, stains, and underglazes. The hall wall cabinet held the handmade jewelry. And in the lobby you would find needlepoint/cross stitch, embroidery, quilting, knitting, sewing, and crocheting, all done by the seniors in the county.

The 2015 competition artists were Dee Anderson, Rose Barrett, Emy Bellotti, Merle Blair, Faye Brookman, Greg Buckingham, Donna Carley-Tizol, Wendy Dade, Naomi Elsworth, Dolores Gibbs, Harriet Gossett, Helene Hautzenroder-Reh, Mary Johns, JoAnn Kalb, Patricia Kangelos, Harry Knott, Heather Landis, Laurence Langfeldt, Carolyn Lewis, Dottie Marshall, Carol Mastrostefano, Amber Moore, Eileen Moore, Linda Osborne, Grace Palmer, Donna Pingley, Helen Robertson, Chloe Sherman, Andrea Stamper, Marika Starke, Susan Svenson, Lynda Walker and Joyce Wilson.

This year’s judges were Bob Carpenter, Tracey Delaney, Rané Franklin and Joan Kilmon. Supporting the Senior Arts Competition were the Senior Councils of Calvert Pines, North Beach, Southern Pines and the Arts Council of Calvert County.

The Arts Council of Calvert County presented Best in Show to Harry Knott and his carving of the blue crab.

The People’s Choice Award will be presented in June. If you like a piece of artwork on display through May, please fill out a ballot at the front desk of Calvert Pines Senior Center. Many of the artists who entered the 2015 competition participate in various classes held at the three senior centers in Calvert County. If you are interested in taking classes, please contact your local senior center or pick up a newsletter showing events, programs and services.

New for next year, the Office on Aging will be hosting an Art Show and Sale instead of a Senior Arts Competition. Please enjoy the photo gallery.
