Are you able to lend a hand to help your community Saturday, April 29th?
The mission statement of Christmas in April is to preserve and revitalize houses, assuring that low income homeowners live in warmth, safety and independence. Christmas in April*Calvert County, Inc. is a United Way Member Agency, which helps disabled and elderly homeowners, and families with children, who live in and own their house and cannot afford to pay for home repairs. Christmas in April works on the last Saturday of April to repair homes. Emergency repairs and follow-up work are done throughout the year.
Christmas in April*Calvert County, Inc. has been assisting homeowners in need since 1991. We work all year to get ready for that special day. Once a home is referred, a home visit is made by the house selection committee. A determination is made whether the house meets the eligibility criteria and can be repaired by Christmas in April. By January the houses are selected, and volunteers are matched with work requirements on each house. Our volunteers include licensed carpenters, plumbers, and electricians, but the majority of people, who are not housing experts, work under the supervision of a house captain; as a handyman, painting, cleaning, and/or doing yard work because they want to make a difference. Some of the work we are able to do:
Built ramp and railing for wheelchair, replaced carpets, repaired roof, remodeled bathrooms to make handicap accessible, replaced shingles and tar paper, replaced plywood sheets, replaced gutters, replaced deck, cleaned gutters, repaired downspout, replaced flashing on roof, installed new furnace, replaced facia board, installed insulation under house, replaced windows and doors, repaired drywall, installed and repaired locks, painted rooms inside of house, repaired window screens, painted outside of house, replaced shutters, cleaned out crawlspace, removed trash, removed trees blown down, replaced bathroom and kitchen floor, replaced bathroom and kitchen vinyl flooring, replaced floor joists and installed smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
