On Wednesday, November 3, 2021 the Calvert County Health Department (CHD) in Maryland sent a letter to parents and guardians announcing the approval of the COVID vaccine for children ages 5-11. In the letter, Dr. Polsky states that over 5,200 middle and high school students had been vaccinated and those students were no longer required to quarantine if exposed.
On Thursday, November 4, 2021 Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) sent the same letter to all CCPS parents and guardians announcing their partnership with the CHD to make COVID vaccinations available to students ages 5-11 in schools. On Friday November 5, 2021, Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) sent a message from the Calvert Health Department (CHD) encouraging parents / guardians to register their 5-11-year-old children for the COVID-19 vaccination clinics at public schools November 9-12, 2021.
Parents could give consent online if they were not able to be present when the shot was given. On Tuesday, November 9, 2021 a 6-year-old child was vaccinated WITHOUT parental consent. A teacher with two students with the same first name sent the wrong student to the nurse’s office. The nurse did not know the wrong child was in her office. The parent later discovered the band aid, called the health department and was told her child was indeed vaccinated by mistake.
This is an unfortunate and possibly dangerous situation where mistakes could have serious consequences. What if this child had a medical or religious reason for not getting vaccinated? What if the child had an allergy or an adverse reaction? There are serious questions with regard to liability when mistakes are made, not to mention the need for parents to direct medical decisions for their children.
Parents should be present when children are receiving medical care. Teachers should not have to navigate medical choices. We are placing additional stress on our teachers, support staff AND risking the health of a child due to an oversight.
