On June 5th and 6th over 700 high school seniors and their guests participated in Project Graduation, an alcohol-free and drug-free celebration held on graduation night for the graduating seniors from Calvert, Huntingtown, Northern and Patuxent High Schools. Project Graduation is an important event in Calvert County, as it provides the county’s graduating seniors an opportunity to celebrate graduation in a safe environment with their classmates and guests. This event reduces the chance of crashes and other risky behavior involving our youth on one of the most important nights of their lives – graduation.
This year the schools had access to Dave and Buster’s, Patuxent Naval Air Station – Drill Hall, and the Calvert High School Campus. The staff at all three locations were outstanding; helping and supporting in anyway needed. It was a long two nights for many but well worth the sleepless hours to make sure our teens had an enjoyable and safe night. Project Graduation sponsored by the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, Inc. (CAASA) has been keeping our students safe for the past 31 years.
An event this large that takes place on two different nights at multiple locations requires many volunteers, and CAASA’s Board of Directors would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their volunteer efforts and donations of time and resources. Thank you to the Project Graduation Coordinators, chaperones, Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, Barrack “U”, bus drivers and bus contractors who donate their time and use of their buses, Calvert County Public Schools’ Transportation Office, Optimist Club of Solomon’s and Optimist of Calvert who provided refreshments for the students. Some of our volunteers have been helping with Project Graduation for 31 years and we offer them a special thank you for hanging in there and supporting the program. The generosity of everyone is appreciated.
As we begin planning for next year, we hope you will consider supporting Project Graduation 2019 by making a monetary donation. Donations are tax-deductible and can be mailed to P.O. Box 2104, Prince Frederick, MD 20678.
