As residents of Calvert County, my wife and I try actively to support the organizations and activities that make it such a great place to live. With local elections coming up, we—like all Calvert residents—want to elect the best leaders to carry us into the future. It is well known that after all is said and done, elected and paid government employees make and enforce the decisions that greatly affect our day-to-day life.
Among the most important functions performed by our local government that affects our lives is law enforcement. Fortunately, our citizens are empowered to choose our senior law enforcement officials-the County Sheriff and the State’s Attorney (SA). We all recognize that the Sheriff keeps the peace through enforcement of laws, but it is not always understood that it is the Office of the SA that holds the arrested individuals and law breakers accountable. We have all seen on TV that it is the District Attorney’s (DA’s) Office that decides what charges to bring against those arrested and then to prosecute the offenders. In Calvert County our DA equivalent is the SA’s Office that performs these functions. It is also the SA responsibility to find balance between forms of convictions and providing options to those who deserve a second chance. Maintaining this balance can require some tough calls. The ability to make those calls require knowledge, leadership and experience and those calls are critical in the effective operation of the Office of the SA.
One of the two Republican candidates running for the Office of the SA stands out as having more depth and relevant experience. Kathryn At Lee Marsh (KALM) has worked in that office here in Calvert County for 20 years and has been the Deputy—highest unelected position in SA office—for three years. She has had a breath of experience dealing with the full spectrum of legal issues including major crime, domestic violence, sexual and drug matters, and others. She has also been supervising other Attorneys in the discharge of their duties.
As residents of Calvert we are very fortunate in having an ideal candidate running for our AS’s Office, so let’s all vote and elect KALM to ensure the County continues to have strong legal prosecutorial representation.
