Deputy State Fire Marshal Helys Valles successfully graduated from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Police and Correctional Entry Level Training Academy on Thursday, April 1, 2021.

Deputy Valles graduated academically at the top of her class with a 97% average grade on all of her exams.  This earned her the “Academic Award” from the academy.  Along with her outstanding academic achievement Deputy Valles was pushed mentally and physically throughout the 6 month long police academy where she received training in criminal law, traffic law, defensive tactics, firearms, emergency driving and current trends in the law enforcement field just to name a few.

Deputy Valles will now go on to receive advanced training in fire code enforcement as well as fire and arson investigation.  Deputy Valles is the first female Latino to hold the position of Deputy State Fire Marshal in the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s history.  Her father, a Detective in Puerto Rico attended her graduation and officially “pinned” her with her official sworn Deputy State Fire Marshal badge.  Prior to her employment with the OSFM, she was employed as a federal law enforcement officer in Washington DC.

Deputy Valles will be assigned to the OSFM’s Southern Regional Office which is responsible for fire code enforcement as well as fire and explosive investigations in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.  Deputy Valles holds a Master’s Degree in Forensic Science.

State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci stated, “We are excited to have Deputy Valles join the OSFM team bringing her prior experience in law enforcement and advanced education in forensic science.
