Nominations Needed for Historic Preservation

2015-04-28

HowardBarnAfterNominations are being accepted for the 26th Annual Calvert County Historic Preservation Awards. Have you noticed an old building or tobacco barn that someone restored as you drive around the county?  Does someone in your community record its history or the stories and memories of its longtime residents?  Have you ever thought, “Whoever fixed up that old place did a great job, they deserve a thank you for that!”  May is Historic Preservation Month and is the time to make sure that people who have worked to preserve Calvert County heritage and historic properties get the recognition they deserve.  There are three categories of awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the preservation of Calvert County heritage: project awards, service awards, and awards for preservation education.

Many people and projects have received Historic Preservation Awards over the last twenty-five years including: Dale, Gordon, and Grace Bowen for the restoration of the windmill at Bowen’s Market; William A. Poe for his book, African Americans in Calvert County; Osprey Property Group for archaeology at Chapline Place; and the Port Republic One Room Schoolhouse for public education.  A sample of other awards includes: Paul Berry for decades of devotion to research and action to preserve Calvert County heritage; Harry Knott for his book, Fishlighters; CRJ, Inc. for archaeology at Patuxent Point, and many others.

Projects eligible for recognition this year must have been completed by January 1, 2015.  Nomination forms are available at the Department of Community Planning and Building in the County Services Plaza, the Calvert County Historical Society, and at the Calvert County public libraries.  You may also download forms from the Calvert County web site, www.co.cal.md.us at Services > Community Planning and Building > Historic Preservation. Nominations must be submitted no later than Friday, May 15, 2015.  The Calvert County Commissioners will present the awards on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.

For more information or to request a nomination form, contact Kirsti Uunila, Historic Preservation Planner at (410) 535-1600 x2504 or send e-mail to UunilaK@co.cal.md.us
