Letter to the Editor on The Calvert Recorder Article Regarding Evans Dominates Campaign Fundraising
After having received an email from Tamara Ward stating “as a professional courtesy I filed a story today on campaign finance. Wanted you to know that I had a mention in my story of your campaign contributions to Craig Kontra’s campaign for Sheriff, along with many other notable people in Calvert County. Just wanted you to know.” In all my time working as a journalist, that was not a ‘professional courtesy’ to tell someone you have already done it. It should have given me a chance to say yes or no to it. That being said, the whole tone of the article was written to show favoritism to one particular candidate.
I find it in poor taste to tell the public who gave what to whom. Especially since no mention was given of donations received by a candidate from Prince Georges County and Montgomery County. Either tell all who gave or don’t mention it. A total of donations is fine. If someone wanted to know who gave to whom, they can go to the site and look it up. This article was meant to stir the pot and it did! There is so much more to report on in this election that this was a waste of newsprint. If I had been asked, I would have told the author that the checks were written for tickets and I had been reimbursed by those attending. And since the donations are no longer tax deductible, it doesn’t matter who writes the check. But I was not afforded that opportunity. So although I would have loved to have given that much to the Kontra campaign the information reported was incorrect.
