Often, children who do not have the proper school supplies are too ashamed to admit it and end up falling behind. Students cannot do their best if they do have the right tools. With 19% of registered Calvert County Public School students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, it was clear to Children’s Aid, Inc. we have students, our neighbors, who will start school without the proper school supplies. That’s the reason the Calvert County nonprofit started Operation Backpack in 2009. Our goal is to highlight the importance of education, as well as help students, approach the beginning of the school year with a greater sense of confidence and hope.
This year’s effort provided new backpacks and school supplies to 272 Calvert County students. To date, 1,115 Calvert County students have participated in Operation Backpack.
Children’s Aid, Inc. would like to take the opportunity to thank the following: everyone who donated school supplies to our drive as well as all the businesses who partnered with us as collection sites; Calvert Health Medical Center and Exelon for holding internal school supply drives; local real; and the following businesses/community organizations for their generous donations: The HELP Association, Inc., Sneade’s Ace Home Center, Optimist Club of Calvert County (Prince Frederick), Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Quality Built Homes, Inc., Gentle Family Dentistry, Jetmore Insurance Group, Inc., Movement Mortgage, Calvert Pawn and Lusby Hardware.
