On Monday, April 15, 2019, Our Lady Star of the Sea held its 5th grade DARE Graduation for family and friends. DFC William E Durner was the class instructor for the 14 participants. The graduates attended classes for 2 weeks, at the beginning of April from 2-3 pm. DFC Durner welcomed Sheriff Evans and former County Commissioner Pat Nutter, who brought along certificates from the commissioners for each graduate.
The first order of business was the winners of the essays, written by each participant on what DARE taught them. And according to the winning essays, (yes they read them to the audience), they learned so much about drugs, alcohol, tobacco and team work. 3rd place was awarded to Kyle Franklin, 2nd place to Franki White, and 1st place to Lucie Olekso. Each received a Daren the Lion doll.
A surprise guest, Daren the Lion, appeared and each graduate, as their name was called, came to the podium to receive their certificate, got a handshake from Daren the Lion, and assorted other gifts from the DARE deputies and others standing in line, waiting to congratulate them. Mrs Sharon Cheseldine, 5th grade teacher, was also presented a gift by DFC Durner.
The following students graduated DARE and received their certificates:
Idreece Case-Major, Alex Chigounis, Ryan Dury, Joe DiBonaventuro, Kyle Franklin, Samuel Hooge, Grace Mancuso, Christian Massiglia, Addison McGaffin, Lucie Olekson, Samantha Perrin, Olivia Niland, Keerin Sweeney, and Franki White.
