2020-08-06

The recipients of the Club’s three (3) annual Scholarships have been chosen. Scholarship Committee Chair Betty Knapp, reports the following Calvert County Public School graduates were selected from the 35 applications submitted for consideration.

Brandi E. Bohrer of Huntingtown was selected as the winner of the Club’s Les Knapp Scholarship valued at $8.000. Brandi is a graduate of Huntingtown High School and plans to attend the College of Southern Maryland this fall majoring in Special Education.

The Jim King Scholarship, valued at $6,000, was awarded to Natalie C. Flanders of Prince Frederick. Natalie graduated from Calvert High School and plans to attend Towson University, majoring in Secondary Education and Mathematics beginning in the fall.

Emily Peterson of Dunkirk was chosen as the recipient of the Career/Vocational/Technological Scholarship valued at $3,000. Emily graduated from Northern High School and plans to major in Baking, Pastry and Culinary Arts at Anne Arundel Community College this fall.

Betty expressed the Club’s appreciation to the Scholarship Committee members – Bob Chaney, Barbara Brown, Jack Brown, and Philip Mohler – for their evaluation of the applicants and the very competitive selection of the recipients of the scholarships.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related regulations and restrictions, the actual award of the 2020 Calvert Optimist Scholarships is planned for a virtual presentation on Monday-August 17, 2020, at 7PM in an outdoor setting (weather permitting) in Prince Frederick.
