Mike Wilson filed to run as a Republican in the Calvert County Sheriff’s race for 2022. Mike Wilson served his country in the United States Air Force for four years, as a military police officer and security specialist. He received training in special weapons tactics, law enforcement functions, security issues, security clearance investigations, nuclear weapon convoys and warfare tactics. He was awarded the “Air Force Good Conduct Medal” and “Air Force Achievement Medal,” for meritorious service. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1988.
Upon his discharge from the Air Force, he applied to the Maryland State Police academy and was accepted. He served as a Maryland State Trooper for 23 years, before retiring. He was a Sergeant with the Maryland State Police and performed many different job functions while working throughout the State of Maryland. His tenure with the Maryland State Police enabled him to become proficient in many aspects of law enforcement to include: criminal investigation, traffic enforcement, patrol, Governor’s Executive Protection details, various computer crime investigations, critical infrastructure protection, “Sergeant of Arms” in the Maryland State Senate, Commander of the Legislative Security Section as well as other management and leadership roles within the Department.
Mike Wilson was appointed Chief of Police for the Department of General Services, Maryland Capitol Police in September of 2011, and became Colonel Mike Wilson. The Maryland Capitol Police is a full service police department with 173 officers, which provide law enforcement and security services for over 30 State buildings, 10 parking garages, and 16 surface parking lots used by State employees and visited by over one million people per year. Maryland Capitol Police is responsible for security and law enforcement functions at the Annapolis Complex, to include the Maryland State Capitol, Governor’s Mansion, and House and Senate Buildings. Maryland Capitol Police are in charge of approving and organizing rallies and de demonstrations that occur in Annapolis during the Legislative Session. He is responsible for managing a $23 million dollar budget and is directly supervised by one of the governor’s cabinet secretaries, the Secretary of the Department of General Services. Maryland Capitol Police is also tasked with operating and controlling one of the largest state identification card programs in Maryland.
While serving as Chief of the Maryland Capitol Police, Wilson made the decision to continue his education; thus, giving him the ability to become a more effective leader in the law enforcement community. Chief Wilson graduated from Johns Hopkin’s University, Police Executive Leadership Program, in May 2015, and received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management. In May 2016 he received his master’s degree from Johns Hopkin’s University in Organizational Leadership. Chief Wilson has over 35 years of law enforcement experience. The past 15 years have been in leadership positions, which has enabled him to become an effective and experienced leader in law enforcement.
