Overnight & Daytime Work Includes Temporary Ramp Closures, Paving, and Bridge Preservation; Drivers Should Plan Ahead and Seek Alternate Routes to Avoid Delays
Summer highway construction continues statewide as the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) makes improvements along State-maintained routes. In Montgomery County, construction crews are continuing work on several projects – and are preparing to begin work along three heavily-traveled corridors: I-270, I-495 (Capital Beltway) and MD 97 (Georgia Avenue). Permitted work includes temporary lane and ramp closures overnight to avoid peak travel times.
Construction and maintenance work is scheduled at the following locations:
Ramp Resurfacing at the I-270 / Montrose Road Interchange:
Starting at 9 p.m. tonight, MDOT SHA crews will begin a project to repair the pavement and shoulders at the I-270/Montrose Road interchange in Rockville. The first temporary ramp closure is the eastbound Montrose Road ramp to northbound I-270. Motorists can expect nightly ramp closures and detours between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday nights through Friday mornings until early fall. Motorists may use MD 355 (Frederick Road) as an alternate route. Remaining temporary ramp closures include: northbound I-270 ramp to westbound Montrose Road; southbound I-270 ramp to eastbound Montrose Road; and southbound I-270 ramp to westbound Montrose Road. MDOT SHA’s contractor is Francis O. Day Construction, Inc. of Rockville.
Inner loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) Bridge over MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) Bridge:
On Sunday night, August 12, MDOT SHA crews will repair damaged bridge joints on the inner loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) Bridge over MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) in Chevy Chase. Motorists can expect single lane closures beginning at 9 p.m., double lane closures at 10 p.m. and triple lane closures at 11 p.m. All lanes will open by 5 a.m. each day. The bridge repairs will be complete by the end of August. MDOT SHA’s contractor is Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg.
MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) Resurfacing in Wheaton/Silver Spring:
MDOT SHA is also starting work to resurface MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between White Oak Drive and MD 193 (University Boulevard). Crews will remove the top layer of asphalt, pave and restripe a two-mile section of MD 97. Motorists should expect single lane closures Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and double lane closures Sunday nights through Friday mornings between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Work is expected to complete late fall. SHA’s contractor is Francis O. Day Construction, Inc. of Gaithersburg.
While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
