On December 12, 2017, the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy held graduation for Session 58, for the six Correctional Officers for Calvert, Charles and St Mary’s County, at St John Vianney Life Center in Prince Frederick. Representing the Board of Directors were Major Mike Merican (standing in for President Sheriff Tim Cameron of St Mary’s County), Sheriff Mike Evans of Calvert County and Sheriff Troy Berry of Charles County.
F/SGT Keith Hicks, Director of the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy, welcomed everyone, followed by the invocation, posting of colors and the National Anthem, performed by Andre and Joy Mitchell.
Opening remarks were given by Jane Sachs, Director of Correctional Training, Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commissions, Ed Moroney, Associate Professor for CJS and HLS at College of Southern Maryland, and the three sheriffs. The class speaker was C/O Vincente Torboli, Calvert County detention Center.
F/SGT Hicks recognized the instructors from the academy: Assistant Director Richard Gray-St Mary’s County, Class Coordinator CPL Benjamin Luffey-St Mary’s County, Staff Instructor CFC Joseph D’Agostino- Calvert County, Staff Instructor Harry ivers –Charles County, Staff Instructor Michael Licausi-St Mary’s County, Staff Instructor Brianne Gray-Calvert County, Staff Instructor M/CPL Joseph Piazza-Charles County, Staff Instructor Michael Bomgardner-Calvert County, Staff Instructor Jennifer Wood-Charles County, Administrative Assistant Maureen Audley-Calvert County and Administrative Assistant Melinda Hatch-Calvert County.
The Session 58 graduates were Elizabeth L Cheseldine – St Mary’s County, Casey G Hill – St Mary’s County, Michelle A Jones – Charles County, Alexander M Mueller – St Mary’s County, Brandon M Reynolds – St Mary’s County and Vincente M Torboli – Calvert County. The Physical Fitness Award was given to Brandon M Reynolds, Scholastic Achievement Award was presented to Elizabeth L Cheseldine, and the Steve Allen Award was awarded to Michelle A Jones. Diplomas were presented by the Sheriffs.
The Class Guidon was retired by C/O Casey Hill, Class Leader and C/O Brandon M Reynolds, Guidon Bearer. A short fil presentation of the class during their days of training was shown, followed by dismissal of the new graduates. Refreshments were served in the hall.
