Bunny DeMember, a local lady, is in dire need of a kidney. She had been diagnosed with kidney disease and over time her kidneys do not work well enough to keep her alive. She is receiving dialysis treatments and her only other option is a kidney transplant. Bunny is doing dialysis three times a week, which leaves her sick and weak.
Finding a replacement kidney is not easy. The average wait time is five years. There are two ways to get a kidney – one is from a deceased person and the other is through a living person. A living kidney donation lasts longer and functions better. Asking a living person to donate a kidney, especially family and friends, is a very difficult thing to do. Some people are afraid of the surgery and what having one kidney means.
Here are some basics about kidney donation:
• You only need one kidney to live a long healthy life
• Most donor surgery is done laparoscopically
• The cost of the evaluation and surgery is usually covered by the recipient
• You will have a separate team of healthcare professionals to evaluate you and help you understand the risks and benefits.
You can learn more about being a living donor on the National Kidney Foundation website: www.kidney.org/livingdonation or by calling the free confidential helpline at 855-653-2273.
