St Leonard Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad’s (SLVFD&RS) history began in 1982, when several citizens decided to begin the formal process of establishing a fire department in the town. In 1984 the Calvert Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted to support the construction and equipment of the new station in St Leonard. Ground was broken in 1986 and the fire station was declared “in service” on March 8, 1987. Company 7 had only one fire engine and one ambulance to begin with, but ran 438 calls for service.
Since 1987, Company 7 has grown. Financial support from citizen donations, The Beach Party, Christmas Tree Sales and the Annual Fund Drive helps to purchase and maintain needed rescue equipment. Company “7 Alarmers”, the auxiliary formed in March 1987, has also helped support the fire department.
Ricky Weems II is the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief (7A) Joey Anderson and the Safety Officer Norm Bauer, Jr.
On March 1, 2016, The Calvert Board of County Commissioners presented St Leonard Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad with an award to recognize their commitment and provision of volunteer fire, rescue, and EMS (emergency medical services) to the citizens of Calvert County.
