The ribbon cutting ceremony for the Southern Pines addition was held on April 5 in the beautifully decorated dining room at Southern Pines Center. The welcome was presented by Ed Sullivan, Program Specialist and the invocation was given by Pastor Ralph Nevin. The speakers included members of the Southern Senior Pines Senior Council, Rose Barrett and Kathy Baker. Nancy Lehman, Chairperson Calvert County Commission on Aging, and Susan Justice, Division Chief, Calvert County Office on Aging. The final speaker was Tom Hejl, the Board of Calvert County Commissioners. Thanks to all of our County Commissioners, and many thanks to the citizens of Calvert County to assist our senior citizens enjoy the facility. Additionally, most of the Calvert County Commissioners were in attendance to join in the ribbon cutting!
The speakers continued to say how the beautiful addition required many people with a vision to complete. It is a large sunny room with many windows and a beautiful butterfly garden and others plantings visible. The furniture, yet to be delivered, has been financed by the Senior Council through fund raising activities.
Approximately 125 people attended the grand opening, and were served fruit, pinwheel sandwiches, a large cake, punch, coffee, and iced tea. The festivities lasted approximately one and a half hours. So many people assisted in the success, including all of the office staff, volunteers, Kathy and her kitchen crew, the roving photographers, just too many people to mention without fear of omissions. A rewarding event to be shared by many members of the Southern Pines Senior Center!
