July 22, 25 – 29!
Sotterley is the perfect place to take part in the statewide Buy Local Challenge starting on July 22nd! In partnership with the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, Historic Sotterley is participating in the Buy Local Challenge – a voluntary pledge to include Maryland products (produce, eggs, meat, fruit, wine, beer, etc) in your meals for one week. Including local products supports local farming families, strengthens the local economy, and promotes healthy local businesses.
Saturday, July 22 – To kick-off the Buy Local week, our normal Farmer’s Market organic vegetables, as well as local fruits & meats, homegrown herbs, and homemade baked goods will be accompanied by a day of cooking demonstrations! At 10 am, our friends at The Cow & The Fish will make one of their fantastic dishes, using Sotterley ingredients. Following them, at 11, Sotterley’s own Bucky Readmond and R & H Farms will collaborate for a cooking demonstration using R&H Farm’s delicious pork and Sotterley’s own organic vegetables. Throughout the day, Harry Dalton will demonstrate the day-long process of making handmade sauerkraut.
Tuesday, July 25, through Friday, July 28 – Guests can purchase Sotterley’s own organic produce at our Visitor’s Center during our normal operating hours. Want to pick your own? Right now, our zucchini, squash, cucumbers, banana papers, and potatoes are perfectly in season in our Pick-Your-Own Fields. Stop by the Visitor Center to check-in and get picking!
Saturday, July 29, – Give a little, get a little! In addition to our normal Farmer’s Market activities, we will have an entire day centered on kids and our community! For all kids that like to dig in the dirt (don’t they all?), they can help us harvest the potatoes which we will be donating to local food banks. Additionally, kids will be putting finishing touches on birdhouses which have been created out of reclaimed PVC pipe. After decorating their birdhouse, kids will be allowed to take their creation home with them!
