The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (30-23) took the series opener over the visiting New Britain Bees (20-34) 3-2, in a rain-shortened victory.
Daryl Thompson (5-3) and Kyle Simon (3-4) matched up for the second time this season, battling toe-to-toe through the first three innings. Simon gave up two singles in the bottom of the first to the Blue Crabs, stranding Jose Lozada and Edwin Garcia. The game remained scoreless through three innings, with Thompson allowing just one baserunner in the first nine batters he faced.
Thompson ran into trouble in the top of the fourth inning, allowing New Britain to strike first in the game. With two on and two out, Johnathon Griffin won a battle with Thompson, singling to left field and scoring both runs. Thompson stranded Griffin at second, escaping the inning trailing just 2-0.
The Blue Crabs began the fight back in the bottom of the inning, putting up one off Simon. Cory Vaughn and Devon Rodriguez teamed up for back-to-back doubles, cutting the lead in half. Southern Maryland added another in the fifth inning, scoring one more. Jose Lozada led-off with a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch. A Zach Wilson single moved Lozada to third, allowing him to score the next play on a high chopper from Michael Snyder.
Thompson settled in, putting away the next seven batter he faced after the single, taking a tie game into the bottom of the sixth. As the rain began to move in, the Blue Crabs took advantage of an opportunity, taking their first lead. Rodriguez started it off with a single, before Luis Alen and Brian Bistagne came through with back-to-back hits. Rodriguez scored easily from third on the Bistagne single, putting Southern Maryland ahead 3-2.
Thompson headed back out to the mound for the top of the seventh, having given up just four hits. He forced a ground out and a strikeout, getting two outs in the inning, before the weather was deemed unplayable. After a 50-minute rain delay, the game was called, with the 3-2 score holding.
