Traffic Relief NOW Calls on Biden Administration to Reverse Decision

To Delay Traffic Relief Plan

Majority of Marylanders Support Transformational and Popular American Legion Bridge and Capital Beltway Expansion Project

Traffic Relief NOW today released the following statement from spokesman Doug Mayer in response to news that the Federal Highway Administration has delayed the New American Legion Bridge I-270 Traffic Relief Plan:

“Since the moment this transformational project was announced, partisan political actors, anti-road activists, and obscure government organizations have done everything in their power to delay it. Sadly, we can now add an acting federal highway administrator to the list of people who seemingly don’t care that countless Marylanders are stuck in some of the worst traffic in America. The Biden administration needs to take immediate action and reserve what is hopefully a rogue decision.

“The President has rightly pledged to build massive infrastructure projects across this country, projects that are long overdue and that are wildly popular with the vast majority of Americans. Being openly pro-traffic and anti-progress is not a winning position for anyone, including the federal government. America has a growing reputation as a country that either refuses or is incapable of doing big things – forcing state governments into the same position due to politics or bureaucratic miscalculations is unacceptable.

“For decades, Maryland elected officials have failed to take action on traffic congestion and it has only gotten worse. Hiding from problems never solves them. Governor Hogan broke the mold when he announced this solution and has gone to great lengths to make it a reality. The Biden administration has a tremendous opportunity to show all of America what is possible when the federal government successfully partners with state and local governments to deliver the projects our country desperately needs.

“Ultimately, we are hopeful this delay is the action and opinion of one administrator and not the official position of the Biden administration. We are confident the project will move forward as planned despite this setback and the never-ending attempts from extreme activists to stop it from getting Marylanders moving again.”
