As there were so many places from North to South in Calvert, there was only enough time to go by two places and check out what work was getting done. The weather was sunny and perfect.
Starting out in Dunkirk, and checking in with Russell Bowie, leading a team from Christmas in April*Calvert County, They were busy removing a steep ramp and putting in stairs and building a new more accessible and not so steep ramp. The team, made up of 5 Exelon employees and 4 Christmas in April*Calvert County volunteers, was hard at work removing the old ramp and putting in new stairs and working on the new ramp. Exelon provided the materials.
Team Leader Russell Bowie, “I spoke with one of the homeowners, Dan. I asked him why he wanted a new ramp. He said his “better-half” is in an electric wheelchair and she was terrified to go up and down the old ramp. It was at such an incline that she felt she was going to flip over. So, that’s why we did what we did. She is VERY happy now.”
Heading South, decided to go see what was happening at the United Way house in Prince Frederick. There 1 retired State Trooper, 1 Christmas in April*Calvert County Board of Directors and 5 employees and retired from Exelon, were hard at work pressure washing and pulling up the carpet on the porch. They were also assessing dead trees to be taken down in the back yard. They were also able to remove the basement toilet before leaving for the day. On Thursday, volunteers, 5 Christmas in April*Calvert County and 2 from Exelon started the painting and yard work. On Friday 2 Exelon employees and 5 Christmas in April*Calvert County volunteers came back to do painting and mulching of the beds. SMECO/Penn Line started removal of the dead pine trees in back of the shed. Christmas in April*Calvert County will return in 3 weeks to haul away the tree trunks.
A lot of work accomplished by volunteers, making our county just a little bit better.
