For Summer Camp
Local youth choir Voices In Praise (VIP) has received a Missional Innovational Grant from the Baltimore-Washington Conference (BWC) of the United Methodist Church. The funds will go to support a summer camp for local youth choirs and their directors. The four-day camp is designed to jumpstart youth choir programs by giving directors the tools and support they need, while simultaneously introducing students to quality youth choir programming – inspiring them to ‘make a joyful noise.’ The camp will take place at West River United Methodist Center with a finale concert to be held at National United Methodist Church in Washington, DC.
The idea for a summer camp emerged as a natural extension of the successful VIP program, which performs at churches throughout the Baltimore-Washington region and beyond. Now in its 21st year of ministry, VIP is a powerful mixed choir of 40-50 young singers, made up of students who hail from 10 different churches and all corners of the community.
Holly Reynolds Lee, the Founding Director of VIP, stated that “Time and time again, church leaders and musicians have watched Voices In Praise and asked, ‘How do you DO that?’ This camp is designed to show them how we approach music ministry and what happens behind the scenes.”
VIP’s community model offers an alternative to traditional church choir programs. “Our approach to ministry is not only unique, but highly effective,” reflected Lee. “I appreciate that the BWC has affirmed the work of VIP. We are honored to be a grant recipient and excited about working with other choirs and directors.”
Briana Gresko, a National Board Certified Teacher and Director of Choral Activities at Southern High School, will serve as the Camp’s Guest Conductor. Sandy Melson Griese, organist and choir director at Friendship United Methodist Church and Director of Choral Activities at Huntingtown High School will accompany on piano. Together, Gresko, Griese, and Lee have more than 50 years of combined church music experience.
